It is often referred to as “the green card lottery,” in which the U.S. randomly selects 50,000 applicants from countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S., and with specific educational qualifications, granting them green cards. It is an inexpensive and relatively simple path to obtaining a green card, without requiring sponsorship from a U.S. employer or family member.
